STEP: Striving Toward Educational Prosperity. Founded in 2009, we bring up to 500 North Carolinian elementary and middle school students to UNC’s campus each spring, with the aim of exposing youth to higher education and sharing how a Bachelor’s degree can be made possible and affordable.
Research has shown that by the time a student reaches their 9th-grade year, they have already made a decision whether or not to pursue college. STEP seeks to expose disadvantaged students to the idea of college before they enter high school. We fund and plan for NC public schools to experience life as a Tarheel: watch different performances from student organizations, listen to speakers from admission or cultural heritage centers , participate in a lesson with a professor and experience real campus food at a dining hall. Since its founding, STEP has hosted over 10,000 students from dozens of counties. Most of these students, if they chose to go to college, would be first-generation college students.
