Backcountry Squatters

Backcountry Squatters is a 501c3 nonprofit that uplifts women and non-binary people at a pivotal moment in their lives by connecting them in the kinship, growth, and empowerment of shared outdoor pursuits. The mission is to create an inclusive outdoor community by providing opportunities for leadership, personal growth, and professional development. This is accomplished through chapters that offer events for community building, DEI education, and honing technical skills. Our UNC chapter strives to connect women and non-binary people in the Carolina community to one another and to opportunities that develop their passion for the outdoors. Our organization is inclusive of both undergraduate and graduate students, welcoming everyone from beginners who wish to explore the outdoors for the first time to experienced adventurers seeking community and mentorship. We aim to foster confidence, environmental stewardship, and belonging through activities like outdoor expeditions, technical clinics, socials, and collaborative events with other campus organizations.
