ArtHeels

ArtHeels is a service-based organization that is passionate about bringing art to the UNC campus and the surrounding community. We believe in the principles of art therapy, which as defined by the American Art Therapy Association, are “…the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore…feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being” (AATA 2013). Thus, though none of our club members are licensed therapists, we recognize the ability of art to promote expression and well-being in a variety of settings, and we serve to bring these powers of art to Chapel Hill.

ArtHeels works to accomplish this arts-based healing through audience-specific art projects .

Most recently we have had committed volunteer partnerships with Communiversity, the Pediatric Playroom in UNC hospital, and other organizations. We try to offer as many volunteer opportunities as possible throughout the semester!
