Kids in Nutrition (KIN) at UNC Chapel Hill is a chapter of the non-profit organization KIN, and we seek to address urgent public health and environmental concerns by focusing on early intervention in prenatal and child nutrition. We aim to empower the next generation with knowledge about sustainable and nutritious diets through hands-on, interactive activities tailored to young mothers and elementary school students. The need for this organization stems from a combination of rising childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes, and a general lack of nutritional literacy in the United States, where children receive less than 8 hours of nutrition education per year—far below the 40 hours recommended to effect behavior change.

Our chapter will implement a comprehensive, multi-generational approach, addressing both prenatal and early childhood nutrition. By educating young mothers about the critical importance of proper maternal nutrition, we can influence the health of future generations from the womb.
