Heel-Gram was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to foster connection and combat social isolation for individuals with disabilities who were unable to attend their usual programs. The initiative began with UNC students writing handwritten letters to provide encouragement and companionship, demonstrating that support could extend beyond in-person interactions.
The club's name is inspired by a family member, Graham, who found strength and happiness in receiving letters from his community. His experience served as the foundation for Heel-Gram, with the goal of expanding this meaningful connection to others.
What started as a response to COVID-19 has since grown into an ongoing pen-pal program that fosters friendships between UNC students and individuals across North Carolina with disabilities. Today, Heel-Gram continues to build community through letter-writing, ensuring that meaningful connections remain at the heart of its mission.
