Our Mission Statement

The USDA defines food insecurity as a condition in which an individual or family experiences reduced quality, variety, or desirability in dietary options. In extreme circumstances, this may result in disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake that have a variety of implications on physical and emotional wellbeing. Food insecurity may be long-term or temporary and is largely influenced by social determinants of health, such as income, employment, racism, and disability.

Many of these determinants are ingrained within political and healthcare environments. These structural and systemic inequalities and injustices may not be solved within our lifetimes; however, Flourish plays an important role in helping others find health, nutrition, and food security where they are planted .

We are a collection of students focused on expanding community nutrition, nutrition education, food security, and food equity in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro areas. We are a program with the Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC), the UNC student-run free health clinic, and are uniquely tied to other nutrition-focused organizations such as the Nutrition Coalition on
