The vision for Dive In: Chapel Hill (formerly Carolina Swim Clinic) is to offer a safe, comfortable environment where children from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community can learn how to swim. Specifically, Dive In: Chapel Hill offers free swim lessons to children from families who would not otherwise be able to afford swim lessons or have language barriers preventing access. In doing so, Dive In: Chapel Hill hopes to not only teach basic life-long swimming skills to the children it serves, but also empower their families and foster a sense of community.
In order to fulfill our vision, UNC student volunteers teach swim lessons on Sundays at Bowman Gray Indoor Pool. There are several parking areas nearby where volunteers and families can park for free, such as Stadium Drive and Cobb parking deck. Students from UNC are paired with children (typically between the ages of 4 and 14). The volunteer-child pair or small group work together throughout a semester to improve their swimming abilities. Some volunteers have worked with the same child throughout their time at Carolina, thus enhancing their relationship with the child as both an instructor and role model.
