DKE, the first fraternity at North Carolina, was founded at Yale University on Saturday, June 22, 1844, when 15 undergraduates met in No. 12 Old South Hall and established a new society they called DELTA KAPPA EPSILON. The Fraternity’s open motto, “Kerothen Philoi Aei” or “Friends from the Heart, Forever” was established and created the foundation of unquestioned brotherhood among all brothers, and eventually all chapters. One of the founding fathers, Dr. Edward Bartlett noted that “the candidate most favored was he who combined in the most equal proportion the gentleman, the scholar, and the jolly good fellow.” The fraternity colonized at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on April 5 th , 1851 and chose Beta as its chapter name. The fraternity quickly moved its current location on 132 South Columbia Street at the corner of Cameron and S. Columbia. The house was renovated to its current appearance in 2001, which was made possible by the chapter’s strong and active alumni association.
