A lot can happen in one hour. Especially if you’re trapped in a room, disconnected from your phone, stuck with a few of your friends, and forced to solve puzzles (provided this doesn’t take place in the movie Saw ).

This is the premise of the escape room, and this combination of circumstances creates for a crazy amount of fun. But it doesn’t come easy—an escape room makes you, at times, uncomfortable. There’s always that moment of being stuck where you and your team have no idea what to do. That’s when the magic really happens. The team puts their heads together and achieves something they thought was impossible, making the difficulty and uncomfortableness all worth it. It’s almost eerie how easily the escape room can be a microcosm of life.

We live in such an age of comfort where it seems the go-to activity is sitting on a couch and continuing to binge our shows. But what if comfort doesn’t equate to happiness? Escape rooms push that boundary. They’re hard. They make you think. They make you interact with others—and in person, not through a screen.
