AM_WISE is a group for graduate students with the goal to bring scientists together to connect, generate ideas, share advice, and learn about the problems caused by the disparities in STEM, as well as the inspirational work of minority scientists.
Our Mission is to (1) Communicate – create an atmosphere where graduate students and post-docs can connect, generate ideas, and share advice with fellow scientists; (2) Educate – learn about the problems caused by the disparity of success in STEM, especially chemistry and physics and astronomy, as well as the inspirational work done by minority scientists throughout history; (3) Articulate – discuss ways to solve these problems and encourage departments to be more welcoming of all scientists.
We provide support for graduate students and post docs in the chemistry and physics and astronomy departments to create a more welcoming community for all members of STEM departments at UNC. We do this by inviting speakers from diverse backgrounds to speak to the community twice a year. We run a graduate peer-mentoring program (Graduate Achievement through Mentorship) to provide first-year graduate students the support they need.
