Urban Economics Society at Carolina
The Urban Economics Society at Carolina is a nonpartisan student organization that uses economic thinking to understand housing, land use, and transportation in Chapel Hill and beyond. Why is housing so expensive? How does zoning shape a community? Who pays for transit, and who benefits? We explore these questions through an economics lens.
We host speaker events with UNC faculty, local planners, developers, and public officials. We also hold discussion nights on current local issues, skill-building workshops on working with housing and Census data, and site visits around Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Members can join small data projects analyzing rents, housing supply, and commuting patterns, gaining hands-on research experience.
Our members come from all majors, including economics, public policy, city and regional planning, and business. No prior experience is needed, just curiosity about how cities work. We take no positions on policy questions. Instead, we encourage open, evidence-based discussion where students with different viewpoints can examine local issues together.
