The purpose of Heels for Hope is to build hope for kids in the hospital at UNC. We hope to mobilize UNC medical students to support this mission through hands-on service projects, such as partnering with the organization Roc Solid to build backyard play structures for immunocompromised children during cancer treatment and packing Ready Bags for families facing unexpected and stressful hospital stays. We would also like to have volunteer opportunities to spend time with patients in the Teen Lounge and Game room, pediatric playroom, or Pediatric Oncology clinic. As medical students, we spend much of our time learning how to care for patients clinically, but we believe it is equally important to engage with patients and families beyond the structured clinical environment. A dedicated chapter of medical students supporting pediatric hospital patients would give students a tangible way to serve children and families, support an impactful organization, and develop a lasting commitment to compassionate, patient-centered service.
