The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is a clinical and basic science department within the UNC School of Medicine. DPLM is comprised of experts across more than a dozen subspecialties in clinical and anatomic pathology, along with basic science researchers and physician-scientists. From a learner and trainee perspective, DPLM supports a residency program, more than ten clinical fellowship training programs, and a doctoral program in Pathobiology and Translational Science. Our department fosters an inquisitive and collaborative learning environment grounded in a rich history of impactful scientific discovery, including pioneering contributions to the identification of the genetic basis of hemophilia and hereditary breast cancer. The DPLM mission is to enhance the health and well-being of North Carolinians and beyond by fostering the next generation of scientists and clinicians in a supportive environment while driving discovery and innovation to improve patient care through cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment.
