Beyond Clinic Walls is an Asheville-based student organization that provides an interdisciplinary-focused foundation for future healthcare professionals. Students from the UNC medical school and pharmacy school and from the WCU social work school and nursing school form a team that meets with a local community member who may benefit from the team. The community member may have limitations or barriers to care such as disabilities, social isolation, low health literacy, and socioeconomic disadvantages. The team meets with their client monthly for the academic year to discuss their health and/or lifestyle goals, act as a support system, and educate on disease state management.
The goals of Beyond Clinic Walls are 1) to learn from each member of the healthcare team and complement the others' role in healthcare, 2) to understand and familiarize members with social determinants of health, and 3) to identify and utilize community resources to support individuals.
